My ironman experience

Last June, my mom called me while we were in the midst of our annual family “72-holes of golf in one day” event to see if we wanted to do the Coeur d’Alene Ironman the following year. Both my brothers shrugged their shoulders and said, “why not?,” and my response was a little more hesitant. I go to Medical School in Ireland. When was I going to find time to train for this mammoth event? But then after thinking about it for two days, I couldn’t handle the idea of watching them do this without me, so I signed up for the race. The last triathlon I did was a ½ Ironman in the summer of 2005 with my mom and older brother. I distinctly remember finishing that race and thinking that doubling the distance was something that I was never going to do. (Until this point, I generally prided myself on being the most rational member of my family). So now, here we were, all signed up for something we knew NOTHING about. Gregor and I headed out 2 days later for a medical Spanish course in Guatemala…with the idea in the back of our minds that 1 year later we would have to be in the best shape of our lives.

I headed to India to do a medical elective in the Himalayas in August, and came home in September with high hopes to begin “training.” My mom and I drove over to Coeur d’Alane and drove the course in the car. The twisting and turning through the hills made us carsick, and the reality of our decision was starting to scare me. My mom trained with Amy throughout the year, and I came whenever I was in town. But I had to leave for school in September and was on my own for training over there. I joined a huge gym with a 50 meter pool, and started balancing school and gym life (with little room for anything else). But about 4 days into this routine, I came down with cold symptoms. Thinking it was probably from so much international flying, I decided to let my body rest for a few days, and I would get back to the scheduled plan the next week. I booked a trip to Switzerland to run in the trails, and started planning a bicycle trip in France for the spring when Gregor was intending to visit.

Unfortunately I did not get any better. I stayed sick until I returned home for Christmas break. My whole family would work out at the gym together, and I found myself going with them intending to work out, and veering to the steam room with hopes of getting better. By the time break ended, I started to feel normal again, and headed back to Ireland to take finals for the semester. Luckily I managed to arrange an elective in Seattle for February/March, and I trained with my mom for those two months. That was perfect. Amy came up with the most insane schedule for us to follow, and we managed to get in almost every workout schedules. On top of it, we did core training with Amy 2 days per week, and had a little Pilates thrown into the mix as well. We were completing each of the three disciplines at least 3 times per week, and worked up to the point where we could ride for 3-4 hours and run for 30 minutes afterward. We were swimming 2 miles easily by mid march as well.

So, I was feeling really satisfied with my training when I returned to Dublin. Gregor came to visit on St. Patrick’s day and stayed until early May. He had been in Sun Valley, Idaho training with Todd until this point, and was also feeling pretty happy with his progress. Unfortunately, he fell victim to the terrible respiratory illness as well about 2 days after his arrival onto the Emerald isle. In addition, we had the worst weather I have ever seen over there. It hailed daily. We flew down to France for this amazing bike trip through the Loire Valley, and we rode a total of 10 miles. Gregor couldn’t breathe, and it was too cold to feel the handle bars. By the time we came back to Dublin, things started to improve. We would run together 3-4 times a week, and made it to the gym regularly for swim and stationary bike training sessions. It was pretty funny to see the amount of stuff we put on these non-moving bikes for practice. Food/water/ipod/books…anything to reduce the boredom. From March through June, the only practice I had on the bike was at the gym. It was mind-numbingly boring. In the midst of these sessions, Gregor managed to hurt his knee, and didn’t run again until 3 days prior to the race.

After Gregor left, I was on my own again, and trying to wrap up the school year on a positive note. I was in the hospital from about 7AM to 7PM Monday through Friday, and would force myself to the gym to get in some sort of workout most evenings. If I went home first, it was a lost cause. There was no way I would make it out of the house again. My gym bag had to be filled with enticing goodies, and I began to feel that I was living out of it. Before this training, all you really needed was a pair of good running shoes to make it to the gym and get a decent workout. At all times, my sports bag contained a swimsuit, goggles, cap, sandals, special anti-chlorine shampoo/conditioner, brush, hair ties, balanced dry food (almonds, fruit leather, bananas, cliff bars), sports bra, tank top, running shorts, bike shorts, long sleeve shirt, sweats, water bottle, ipod….and that is for the mellow workouts. On spin class days, we brought our own bike shoes. Anyway, I pushed through, and felt like I was at the “I’m not going to die” point of fitness when I returned home on June 9th.

So here I was, 13 days before the Ironman. I had a new beautiful bike made for me in the spring, that I had put 10 miles on. I did not have an open water swim. The most I ever rode on a bike was 60 miles. The most I ever ran was 13 miles. I started to wonder if I could actually get in ironman shape 13 days before the event. Amy had strict instructions for us to taper. Unfortunately her taper schedule pretty much spelled out my training schedule for the previous 2 months. The anxiety was starting… It was a long two weeks.

We got to Coeur d’Alane on Tuesday the 17th of June. The place seemed fine, in fact it seemed like a mellow vacation town. We went for a swim on Wed. We had our wetsuits, booties, neoprene caps – the works. Actually we felt pretty silly watching all these girls jump in the water with their bikinis. My mom had been stressing for weeks about the water temperature. So we jumped in and, whoosh – I felt miserable, cold, couldn’t breathe. On top of it all the boats in the water made so many waves that I swallowed what felt like gallons of gasoline tainted murky water. I think we lasted about 200 yards before calling it quits. The rocky water gave us vertigo, so we figured we would try again the next day with earplugs. The waves were still a bit nasty on take 2, but we figured we would swim 8 laps along the roped off buoys and get what we estimated to be a mile. I got through 7 laps and felt a bit fatigued and called it quits. Feeling pretty low, we asked the lifeguard the distance between the points-and were relieved to find out that we actually swam over 2 miles.

Friday we registered, and that was bad. Intense anxiety mounted knowing this was official and all these hard bodies around were just so intimidating. We decided to avoid the epicenter until we had to return, because my mom. Gregor, and I were shaking we were so nervous. We couldn’t focus. It was awful. To get rid of the nerves, we all jumped on our bikes and rode the first 14 miles of the course. It was the best thing to do to ease the nerves. The weather was beautiful and that part of the bike course felt like butter to ride. We took sleeping pills that night because no one in our house could get any rest at all. Saturday was the eve of race day. We got all of our 5 bags together (given that 5 people in our house were doing this race, that was 25 little plastic bags full of everything in the world we could anticipate needing). We brought all of our stuff to the transition area, and that was that. Tomorrow was going to come, and there was nothing I could do to stop that.

That night we went to bed early, and about 11PM I heard the rain start. I sat up in bed petrified that we were going to have to bike in the rain. I know nothing about bikes or changing tires. I was now convinced I would get a flat, and be stuck in the rain on the side of the road, alone and miserable. When we finally arose at 3:15AM for our first meal, the rain had subsided, and at 4:30 when the sun rose, it looked like it was going to be a beautiful day. We made it to the swim start sometime before 6AM, and all of us decked out in our wetsuits, we ran into Amy. That was refreshing to know she showed up to do the race too, and didn’t run for the hills (like I had been plotting all week).

We walked down to the beach, they started playing Bittersweet symphony on the loudspeaker, and the cannon went off. We were actually doing this. Really? I thought. I couldn’t believe we were actually doing this. We jumped in the water and started swimming. I was hit from every angle. Bodies all around, I felt like I was stuck in the middle of seals trying to eat me. I thought that this was the stupidest thing in the world and I had to get out of the water. I stopped, took off my goggles, took out my earplugs, and just had 2 minutes to reset myself. Then I put myself back together and just took it as easy as I could for the rest of the swim. I kept getting smacked by people, but it was tolerable. I got out of the water at 1:25:21, which was I was very happy with. At this point I felt great, and just wanted to get on the bike. I followed Amy’s instructions as well as I could. Took it super easy for the 1st lap and drank a Gatorade and water as frequently as possible (about every 15-20 miles). I couldn’t eat solid food for the three days before the race, and race day was no exception. I had 2 ensure drinks during the bike ride, and ate as many shot blocks as I could. At no point did I feel weak. Gregor caught up to me in the bike around the 30 mile mark and we rode together for 10-15 miles. It was a relief to see him and know he was doing fine. At the beginning of the second loop, my muscles started to cramp up, and I wasn’t sure if my body would hold up. But I kept forcing liquid calories down my throat, and eventually I caught a second wind. All of the people around me were strong bike riders who flew across the flats and down the hills. I just couldn’t go as fast. But for some reason, the hilly part was my favorite. I just managed to bounce up the hills past everyone who flew by me on the downhills. My bike time was just over 7 hours which was great for me since it was 52 miles further than my longest ride ever.

I got off the bike, and the volunteers changed me so fast, I didn’t really know what to do with myself. I went to the bathroom, had myself sunscreened, grabbed some Gatorade. Then I had to accept the fact that I had to go run a marathon. I was so stiff from the bike, I didn’t think I would be able to move, but I started running – slowly. It didn’t matter because I was moving. I immediately saw Gregor and Nate (our family friend) running together. It was another relief to know Nate was still going. Again, following Amy’s advice, I ran to every aid station, and walked through eating and drinking. I saw Amy and Todd running together and saw my mom about 6 miles behind me. Total relief now to know everyone made it to the run and they were all moving in the right direction. I managed to last until mile 21 when I just couldn’t run anymore. I knew I couldn’t run fast enough to break 14 hours, and I was walking fast enough to break 15 hours, so I walked. I saw my mom when she had 9 miles to go and I was about 3 miles from the finish, so I knew she would make it before the 17 hour cut-off. I kept walking until there was 400 yards to go, and with the crowd cheering and the end in sight, I convinced by lower body to move just a bit faster down the hill to the finish line. It was the best feeling ever. I loved it, and would have done it again in a heartbeat. My brothers and Nate had finished and were waiting for me in the tent afterward. My dad and med school roommate were there too with chocolate milk and accolades. After I stopped moving, all my muscles tightened, and I turned into a rock. We all went back to our rental house to put on sweats and grab some for my mom. Then we headed back to the finish line to see her finish. What a relief when she crossed that line. She’s amazing. She is the reason we competed in this insane event. It was really fun though. I smiled the whole bike ride, and most of the run. Just a great way to spend a day. The worst part about the race was the anxiety leading up to eat. Overall, a very positive experience
